Review: 71312 Ekimu The Mask Maker - A Unique Finale for Bionicle G2
Today on Mata Nui Monday, we’re wrapping up Bionicle Generation 2 with a look at Ekimu The Mask Maker—the final set review before shifting gears into even more Bionicle content. As the last major G2 release, Ekimu brings some fresh elements to the table, but does he deliver the satisfying send-off fans were hoping for? Let’s find out.
Lore and Packaging:
In the 2016 storyline, Ekimu evolved from a wise mask maker to a full-fledged Toa of Light, aiding the Toa against Umarak and the looming threat of Makuta’s return.
The packaging captures this transformation well: the box front shows Ekimu energizing the battlefield while stepping over a corrupted Hunter mask, with Umarak the Destroyer looming in the background. The backside highlights Ekimu’s action features and includes a comic strip of his confrontation with Umarak.
Build Experience:
Building Ekimu took around 11 minutes—roughly the same timeframe as a typical Uniter set. Although the build time isn’t anything special, the anticipation of seeing Ekimu fully armored definitely brings back memories of getting Takanuva back in 2003. While not quite as hype-inducing, it still carries a "bonus Toa" vibe for G2's finale.
Set Overview: Ekimu The Mask Maker:
From a size standpoint, Ekimu closely matches the Uniter builds but feels slightly slimmer. Where he really stands out is in his color scheme: the use of a transparent blue as the primary body color makes him one of the most unique-looking figures across both generations.
The gold accent pieces are handled beautifully—used sparingly and tastefully, unlike earlier G2 sets like Tahu. The shoulder armor, in particular, looks incredible, and the printed torso design over the transparent blue chest piece is absolutely striking in person.
Ekimu wears a Powered-Up Mask of Creation, featuring the same mold as the 2015 release but now in transparent light blue. The combination with his green eyepiece makes the design pop more vibrantly than before.
In terms of gear, Ekimu wields a Crystal Hammer with a twisting gear function (thankfully no stud shooter!) and a Crystal Saw Shield mounted on his forearm—a clever design choice reminiscent of Captain America’s shield. While the shield doesn't spin, the hinging mount adds extra dynamic display options.
Bonus Item: Corrupted Hunter Mask:
Included with Ekimu is a Corrupted Hunter Mask, identical in mold to Umarak the Hunter's original but recolored in silver and transparent orange. While not a game-changer, it’s a nice bonus for mask collectors.
Current Pricing & Final Thoughts:
Ekimu has quickly become one of the pricier G2 sets on the secondary market. Expect to pay around $85 for a used copy and over $200 for a brand new, sealed set. The Powered-Up Mask of Creation likely drives much of that demand, making Ekimu a rare and sought-after piece for serious collectors.
While Ekimu The Mask Maker doesn’t completely deliver a grand finale for Generation 2, it’s a strong standalone set. The bold color scheme, improved gold usage, and refined play features make him a standout addition to any G2 collection. And in a year dominated by stud shooters, Ekimu’s focus on elegant design over gimmicks feels like a breath of fresh air.
